This book focuses on the practical challenges and opportunities in proto-language (Chinese) inheritance among overseas Chinese youth against the backdrop of globalization. Taking Chinese students at Nanqiao School in San Francisco, USA as its research subjects, it systematically investigates the actual level of proto-language proficiency and its influencing factors through a combination of questionnaires, standardized tests, and in-depth interviews. The study finds that students’ oral proficiency is generally better than their written proficiency, showing an imbalance in overall language ability. There are discrepancies between parents’ and students’ evaluations of language proficiency, with subjective assessments generally higher than objective test results. The study further reveals that family language ecology, parental language attitudes, children’s identity construction, and learning motivation exert a profound influence on proto-language maintenance. Notably, patterns of language interaction within the family, the practical value of dialects, and the involvement of fathers all play critical roles in proto-language transmission.
Lei Shuo is a lecturer at Beijing Language and Culture University and holds a PhD in Overseas Chinese Language Studies. Her research mainly focuses on heritage language maintenance among ethnic Chinese students. She has participated in one project funded by the National Social Science Fund of China.
