This is an academic monograph on the relationship between lexical semantics and syntax, centering around three major matters: 1) the predictability of the syntactic realization of semantic roles; 2) the grammatical nature of lexical semantic representations; 3) the cross-language differences in the mappings between lexical semantics and syntax. Based on the discussion of the above three matters, a review of the existing lexical semantic representations and the linking theory, and an analysis of the grammatical features of Chinese, the author employs the Head-Driven Phrase Structure Grammar (HPSG) and explains and describes the syntactic representations of different types of Chinese verbs in as much detail as possible.
