"Home with Kids" is one of China's top comedy series and it has become China's mostly watched television programme in China. Not only has it been deeply received by Chinese audiences, but furthermore has received a great deal of affection from abroad. This has led Disney and other major cultural media groups successively purchasing the televising and broadcasting rights for other global regions. Currently, the programme has been broadcast in the USA, Japan and Korea, while Canada, Singapore and Vietnam have already purchased the broadcasting rights and set to follow suit.

Chinese television soap operas and series are numerous and also not lacking in excellence, however finding one with suitable language for teaching is still a hard job. Due to this, we chose to adapt "Home with Kids", mainly based on the following factors: a humorous and interesting content, the character types and their lifelikeness, the bright and lively language, an ability to derive connotations of Chinese culture from a variety of different angles. "Home with Kids" has four series altogether and a total of 365 episodes. According to the authors many years of involvement in teaching Chinese language to foreigners and experience in compiling learning materials, we have handpicked 12 episodes and adapted them to suit that of an intermediate and advanced textbook.

During compiling and writing this book, we, at Peking University and other Chinese Language Training Center, used this textbook in their teachings and had received universal praise from students of Chinese from all over the world. These students had shown great passion for the book and have been a source of profound inspiration for us. The textbook has also been appointed as a qualified one to one, video, listening and oral teaching material.

This set of textbooks consist of 3 separate volumes and each volume is composed of 4 individual units. Each unit corresponds to a collection from the play. After considering the restrictions imposed on teaching time and density of vocabulary, we shall divide each volume into 6 lessons each with a duration of video content around 3 - 4 minutes long. Each lesson is made up of a total of 6 sections: a set of "warm-up questions", a text, a vocabulary, grammatical points, cultural points, and exercises.

"Warm-up questions", is present for each and every section as a warm-up using a series of hints and reminder questions to assist students to get into the play quickly.

The text provides a complete memoir of the script and corresponds to the particular segment of time from the original sketch. This is convenient for students to refer back to check and learn.

The vocabulary is designed to break through the tradition, and is listed parallel to the text on the right. In order to take the student's mindset and ability to take in unfamiliar customs into consideration, some phrases difficult to follow are set out. These are accompanied on this page by both Chinese language annotations and English translations.

The "Grammar Points" chooses phrases with a high frequency of usage and sentence patterns with explanations, the dialogue from the play (with indicator of time) and model examples. These sentences are set out according to difficulty and different usage providing students with the ability to expand their knowledge.

"Cultural Points" chooses relevant sections from the play to represent Chinese cultural traits and concepts, behaviorisms and matters. This will assist students to understand Chinese culture in greater depth.

The "Exercises" section borrows from both outstanding domestics and overseas practice methods, and adopts an open approach to the practice model. This contains exercises in listening, speaking, reading and writing. Simultaneously we attempted to provide more space for both teachers and students within the sentence structures and the communication practice drills along with effectiveness of the role plays.

Additionally, "Key sentences" contains an extract of the most colorful sentences from the relevant unit. Every unit on average contains around 100 sentences which can be used for both revision and enjoyment.

we also have in the typeset carried out a meticulous design of each section, inserting numerous lifelike stills from the play and additionally for some new words provided a corresponding picture to allow students to be more relaxed and interested in their study.

This set of materials composes of both script and DVD which are to be used together while studying for maximum benefit.

We would like to thank the former station director of CCTV for "Home with Kids" Mr. Yang Weiguang and producer Mr. Li Hong for their great support, the general manager of Beijing World Publishing Corporation (BWPC) Mr. Zhang Yueming, the chief editor Mrs. Guo Li and the efforts and cooperation of all editors. Thanks to Dr. Kiran Patel for his translation of all materials into English, also to Professor Shan Wen and Professor Tang Sushen for their assistance.

We welcome teachers to use the "Home with Kids" set of materials and hope that those studying China and Chinese Mandarin will get a great deal of help and interest out of these, and from enjoyment and laughs continue to advance their Chinese level.
